Hullo! Hula! Aloha!
London's first 'tiki bar' (apart from The Hilton's Trader
Vics, but that's another story), and coconutty it is too.
Still, once you know that Heilco van der Ploeg of Club Montepulciano hosts
it and the Frat Shack's Josh Collins (pictured) decorated it, the whole
Polynesian-primitive, Hawaiian-hula, House of Bamboo madness starts to
make sense. Josh Collins and Matt Nam have transformed the former pub with
'ancient' Tiki masks, bamboo screens
and Bounty Bar vistas. Collins leaves this week to open
a Tiki theme park in Western Australia (good luck, Josh!) while Heilco is
set to add elements of Club M's appeal
with Club M DJs Nick Hollywood, Felix & Frank Lombard spinning lounge to
swingin' cocktail disco at weekends
plus cabaret and 'tiki tapas' food Š

You could almost be in Honolulu. Now, I've been to Hawaii and I certainly
don't remember it being anything like this. South London Pacific - from
the Club Montepulciano crew - is a great, screaming temple to all things
Hawaiian kitsch, replete with flashing pineapples, totemic Gods, fruity
cocktails served up in tiki mugs and bamboo screens. Not that there's
any fear of intimacy, mind. The music's loud, the decor's louder and
the vibe is loosely-reined Polynesian hedonism.
On the Saturday night we visited there was a £4 cover-charge for the
Elvis entertainment - a small man, modelled on the latter-years-King
with a broad Catalan accent and a Tango tan - but the damnedest thing
is, we would have happily paid more. South London Pacific has that effect.
Greeting the dawn to 'I'm all shook-up' beside a neon pineapple, amid
a generous-hearted crowd, the goodwill and the bad taste are
so contagious you'll forgive them just about anything.
Still, I'm biased. I caught Elvis's sweat-streaked towel. by Tanis Taylor
THE FACE
What do you need after too much ice-cool consumption in over-designed bars?
A double shot of kitsch, of course. SLP delivers the wild world of tiki:
bamboo furniture, shaggy thatch, lurid decoration, encyclopaedic cocktail
menus and grotesquse statues propping up the bar. Originally poularised in
America by Gi's returning from South Sea outposts after World War II, the
gaudy Polynesian style is finally making waves in the UK. Until now, apart
from a few hotel bars, the UK had been a tiki wasteland. 'You see all these
tiki virgins come in and their mouths drop when they look around,' says
SLP's manager Pedro Reis.'It's so tongue-in-cheek.' The bar goes for the
kitsch jugular with its cabaret acts, including an Italian Elvis. As Reis
says: 'He can sure put on a show.' With Dreamworks recently acquiring the
film rights to the heftily theme-tuned "Hawaii Five-O", tiki style could be
emerging overground any day now. Mai Tai anyone?

EXIT/IN & BILLY BLOCK'S WESTERN BEAT.
Western Beat, founded and hosted by Billy Block, is one of Nashville's premier
weekly shows that takes place at the Exit/In. Billy Block is known and respected
for bringing his diverse and incredible taste for "real" music to Music City
USA. Every Tuesday finds the Exit/In packed with fervent music connoisseurs waiting
to see and hear the "best kept secrets" of the music industry. "One could say
that Billy's show holds tons of diamonds in the rough, and sometimes the rougher
the better," says Jeff Carson publicist Brandy Reed. "Most of the country music
population became very familiar with Billy Block's Western Beat when it was picked
up and aired on CMT (Country Music Television) earlier in the year." The show
is also broadcast live on Nashville's WSIX Radio - if you heard it on the Western
Beat, then you know it's damn good!
London: BADABING!
50s & 60s Club London ReLaunched LONDON RELAUNCHED
For all you boppers and jive kids in the UK capital city who are
looking for a cool place to hang out, it may be good news to hear
that Badabing! has relaunched at The Mean Fiddler club in Harleseden.
Resident DJs TDK, Sam Snare, and The Green Onion promise to lift the
roof with the finest rock'n'roll from the 50s (think Eddie Cochran,
Buddy Holly, The Shirelles and Elvis), classic 60s labels (Stax,
Motown, Chess), and a sprinkling of classic reggae vinyl.
Live bands and a cinema screen playing cult visuals, such as King
Creole and The Wanderers also add to the experience. The Badabing!
Promoters believe the club is unique in music policy and atmosphere,
resulting in a definite scene emerging from the Mean Fiddler Saturday
