The HICKSVILLE BOMBERS
The Hicksville Bombers are a trio from Lincoln, England, who since forming
just over seven years ago have played at all the major rocking venues and festivals
in the UK. They have also toured in Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and recently
appeared at the Cruise Inn, Amsterdam.
The band are made up of Dave Brown, Guitar and Vocals; Pete O'Brien,
Double Bass and Vocals and Bryn Jones, Drums and Vocals.
All Three band members are capable musicians and songwriters, which is
evident when you listen to any of their CDs that have been released in the
past few years.
They play Rockabilly/Rock 'n' Roll music in a wild energetic style
and have built up a huge following all over the country. They have played
support to many artists from top Nashville band BR5-49 to the late Screaming
Lord Sutch. Also in this list there are: Matchbox, The Jets, Charlie Gracie,
Jack Scott and they were lined up to support the legendary Carl Perkins, but
sadly he died a few weeks before the gig.
The Bombers have also played as backing group to stars of the Rock 'n' Roll
scene, artists such as Ray Campi, Sleepy LaBeef and Rudy "Tutti" Grayzell.
They took the Americana Festival by storm when they first played there,
ending up being asked to play three of the four days the Festival covered.
They have also played at the Hemsby Rock 'n' Roll Weekender, which is
arguably the biggest event of it's kind in the world, and on both occasions
the crowd went wild, calling for encore after encore!
Their very first CD release simply titled "The Hicksville
Bombers" made it over the Atlantic to the USA where it was the most requested CD
for December 1996. This led to the band being offered a seven day tour of the
Seattle area by Radio station K.M.C.U. This was the station on which their
CD had been so popular. Unfortunately work commitments in England forced the
band to turn down the offer but they hope to get there in the near future.
The second CD was released on the bands own "Cool and Crazy" record label
and is made up of the songs that are most requested from live gigs.
These range from wild rockers such as Flying Saucers Rock 'n' Roll to slow
ballads such as Blue Moon, which one reviewer described as being as good as
if not better than Chris Issacs version.
The third CD release on "Cool & Crazy" is Bombs Away. Bombs Away being a
self penned instrumental that has become something of a signature tune for the
Bombers. Its pounding drumbeat and air raid siren start remind you of the
rumble of air war bombs raining down. Once again this CD shows the wide range
of the bands songwriting talents as twelve out of sixteen tracks are
self-penned.
The fourth CD features Rockabilly legend Ray Campi on one of the tracks,
which was recorded at the Thunderbird Club, Wellinboro - when the Bombers backed
him.
The fifth has been recorded recently, so keep an eye out for it.
No one can ever say that the Hicksville Bombers don't try to give good
value for money. So if you like wild, raw, untamed rocking music played in a
way that is unrelenting, crazy and energetic, then make sure you see the
Hicksville Bombers at a venue near you very soon. With bookings all over the
UK well into the year 2000 you are bound to get the chance to see one of the
most exciting bands on the Rock 'n' Roll scene.
As for musical influences, the band takes from everything.
Dave has the Country influence i.e. Hank Williams, Johnny Horton and is
also influenced by the Blues masters i.e. John Lee Hooker, Slim Harpo and
Lightning Hopkins.
Pete is definitely the "Psychobilly" of the band, into the Meteors,
Demented Are Go etc. He also enjoys the Rockabilly side of music, the Stray Cats
and Brian Setzer.
Bryn is influenced by anything that Rocks along with a beat,
from Johnny Burnette, Sonny Burgess and the wild men of Rockabilly,
right through the Surf/Garage sound and up to Pseudo-Rockabilly bands of
the 70's and 80's, The Cramps; Nik Knox is the coolest drummer, says Bryn.
