Column #70 - Published June 6, 2003

David Weiser's friend Josh trying the Rollin' Rock guitar.

On 05/24/2003 Bob Timmers sent a post to RaB-HoF@yahoogroups.com with the following comment:
"Ronny,
I hope this great story is your next feature column.
Loved it!! Did you take some pix?
Bob"

Donnie Edwards is a great Elvis impersonator, with very strong pipes,
and, specializing in Rockabilly and obscure Elvis songs.

Never being one who's eager to do more work, I will reproduce here the post that Bob calls "this great story", plus a follow-up related post.

Some new work I still will do by also writing about the amazing "Elvis Blue Hawaii Luau Party" that was held here at Rancho Ronny on June 1 with Hawaiian dancers and Elvis impersonators.

Here is my first post which caused Timmers' (and others') positive comments:

Wow!! Yesterday was something else!!

It starts off with me helping out my kid Benny (17 years old) with a presentation about the 1950s for his history class.

As soon as I hit the school grounds with my hep cat threads about six girls ask me: "Are you Benny's Dad?", and then they enquire about my gab Western shirts, the red line Levi's, and about Rockabilly, Viva Las Vegas, and where can they go to see some Rockabilly shows.

Next, some Punk Rock type boys come over and say: "You're Ben's Dad, right?". One shouts (not too loud to avoid punishment): "Rockabilly Forever!!", and "You're the coolest Dad ever!!".

Then comes the presentation. Benny talks about Elvis, Rock'n'Roll, Eisenhower sending the troops to Little Rock to integrate the school, Rock Around The Clock, Bill Haley & The Comets, blue-jeans, etc.

We pass around CDs, Lee Riders with selvedge, 1950's Western shirts, etc. These kids are genuinely excited, and ask many questions about the 1950's, Rockabilly, Western Wear, etc. Loud applause at the end.

Evening comes, and about 30 teenagers (half are friends of Benny, but the other half are not known) show up at my house.

Benny Weiser's friend Chris Perez plays the Rollin' Rocks' guitar.
Chris likes Elvis, Rockin' Ryan, Mack Stevens, Omar, Bill Fadden, DooWop, etc.

Next thing you know, one Hispanic (his name was Dougie Meji I learned later) kid is playing some 1940s boogie woogie on the Rollin' Rocks' guitar, another kid (Abe Escobar) is doing some riffs similar to a Paul Galaxy song, and a third kid (Chris Perez) is playing the DooWop classic "We Belong Together".

They all wear cuffed-up Levi's and Lee Riders and Chuck Taylor Converse tennis shoes, some black leather jackets, a couple of cowboy shirts.

Later we go playing CDs by RAY CAMPI, ALVIS WAYNE, MACK STEVENS, JACK BAYMOORE, JIMMIE LEE MASLON, CHARLIE FEATHERS, BILL HALEY, BILL FADDEN, OMAR & THE STRINGPOPPERS, GENE VINCENT, THE PLATTERS, KID THOMAS, JOHNNY BURNETTE TRIO, etc.

Most of these kids come from Punk, Hardcore, Metal, Emo, and even Rap backgrounds, but are getting bored with those sounds, and they leaned first towards Psychobilly, but now are longing for more authentic ROCK'N'ROLL.

Benny's pal Matt Cuso listening to Mack Stevens on the boombox.

They wanna go see shows featuring Omar, Rip Carson, Lil Luis Y Los Wild Teens, Mack Stevens, Bill Fadden, DooWop groups, The Farrell Bros, The Starlight Drifters, Paul Galaxy, The Bop Kings, any hot Rockin' bands, etc., etc.

Too bad that there are NO all ages Rockabilly shows here in Vegas!!

Always Rollin' The Rock, Rockin' Ronny

OK, then, here is a followup post:

Last night less than a dozen kids stopped by.

I offered to barbecue a steak for one of the kids who came early, since I was having my own dinner, but he was too well mannered to accept.

After dinner, we got down to business with some savage Johnny Burnette & The Rock'n'Roll Trio platters. The kids were stunned at hearing the intensity of "The Train Kept Rollin", "Rockabilly Boogie", "All By Myself" and "Lonesome Train On A Lonesome Track". Actually I too was amazed on how great this is, a million times better than any pop crap on the radio today.

Then it was ROY BROWN's turn. The unique searing voice of this genius immediately caught the attention of everybody. And they were stunned at the hard crashing sound of the drums in "Aint No Rockin' Nomore"

Brits Nick Barnes and Ricky McCann, who drums with
Rockin' Ryan & The Real Goners, enjoy the Luau.

Now it's Rockin' Ryan And The Real Goners, especially impressive were "Beat That Love Out", "Rock On The Moon", and the Hillbilly number "Wasting Time". They all loved that Hillbilly number. Hillbilly is in, Punk Rock is out!

"Juanita" by Chuck Willis follows, and then "Apache" by the Shadows, and "They're Hangin' Me Tonite" by Marty Robbins.

Also Bob Doss' "Dont Be Long Gone", Charlie Feathers' "That Certain Female", Mack Stevens' "I Hate The Moon" and "Psycho", Ray Campi's "Rockin' & Rollin' Towards Tennessee", 13 Stars' "Dixie Flag", J.B. Lenoir's "She Dont Know", Art Adams' "Rock Crazy Baby", The Starlight Drifters' "Long Black Train", Paul Galaxy's "Desert Air", Alvis Wayne's "Swing Bop Boogie", Big Bill Broonzy' "Pussycat Blues", Ronnie Self's "Aint I'm A Dog", etc., etc., etc.

WOWWW!!

One of the teens, Chris, was surfing the Net on the laptop hitting one site after the other of phenomenal 1950s cars for sale on the Internet.

He picked one 1955 Turquoise & White Chevy for sale in California at only $5000. 70,000 miles and in excellent condition. He plans to buy it and drive me around the Las Vegas Strip with the Pink & Black Rollin' Rock flag flying and "Rockabilly Boogie" blasting on the speakers!!

Every now and then, when I was changing records, I could hear a slappin' bass sound coming from the other room. Who was attempting to play it? I think it might have been Benny Weiser, then again, who can be sure?

In the meantime I found a pair of 26 year old rigid deadstock Levi's 505s on ebay for only $9.99 for my youngest son David who last week brought over this Cambodian-American kid, Larry Naw (13 years old), who is, guess what, into Rockabilly! It first started with Tiger Army, Rev. Horton Heat, and now it's Gene Vincent, Rip Carson, and Rollin' Rock!!

In 1958 my grandfather said Rock'n'Roll would only last six months.

It's all happening, and, YOU CANT STOP THE ROCK!!

Always Rollin' The Rock,
Rockin' Ronny

Since then, several of Benny's teenage pals have come over many times. Chris is over here right now, pounding the keys of my laptop and playing on it RAY CAMPI's "Steel Guitar Rag".

David's pal Zack's got the right idea with the Pink & Black
rockabilly shirt, however the hair needs some work! :-) :-0

In addition to Benny's friends coming over, David, my youngest son, also brought over some of his friends, Josh Vigil, Zack Connell, who are starting to dig Rockabilly from a Punk Rock background. And the already mentioned Larry as well. Zack was wearing a Pink & Black bowling shirt, and Josh a Western shirt.

This Rock'n'Roll music is contagious!!

David with the Hula girls

And as if things weren't fun enough already, here come Rockin' Ryan & The Real Goners first playing a smokin' at Jillian's, and then at the Elvis Impersonators Covention at Lady Luck Casino. We went Saturday and were very impressed by the Rockabilly Elvis performances of Donnie Edwards and Justin Shanders.

I was happy to see KAY WHEELER as well.

Johnny Thompson, who organized the Elvis Weekender, asked me if I wanted to hold an "Elvis Blue Hawaii Luau" at my house with Hula dancers and Elvis impersonators.

What a blast that was!!

Life in Las Vegas!!

I will let the pictures speak for themselves!

Always Rollin' The Rollin' Rock,
Rockin' Ronny Weiser,
The Rockabilly Rebel Westerner From Las Vegas,
The Wild Wild West!
