Column #60 - Published August 5, 2002

THE 1950s
ARE ALWAYS WITH US!

Wow, I just noticed, it is now FIVE YEARS that I had been writing this Column!!!

Congrats to BOB TIMMERS for offering it to me, and congrats to MYSELF for hangin' in there for FIVE YEARS!! Let's do another five years, so we'll have a total of ten!

How many times have you heard a relative or friend tell you: "The 1950s are long dead and gone, get over it!"??

Dead and gone? I don't think so.

All too often in these Columns you can read me rant and rave about the sins of modern days, whether it's music, clothing, autos, what not. And surely enough there are a lot of aberrations these days.

But then, you know what they say: the glass is either half full or half empty. For this Column, let's say the glass is half full and let's look at how much the ways and styles of the 1950s are still with us today!

Green Bay 2002:
The greatest 1950s Rock'n'Roll Festival in the history of mankind!
Read Barry Klein's review at www.rockabillyhall.com/BarryGreenBay2002.html

When was the biggest and best Rock'n'Roll Festival ever held? Certainly not by Alan Freed (and a hero he is to us all) and not even in the 1950s. It happened just a few weeks ago at Green Bay and featured over 100 Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, Rhythm & Blues, Western Swing and Doo Wop artists from all over the world. A whole week of nothing but the best 1950s rockin' music!!

The 1950s are dead? NO WAY, the 1950s are always with us!!

Do you know what this year's biggest selling CD is?
It's the soundtrack from the movie - O Brother, Where Art Thou - which features Blues, Bluegrass, Hillbilly and Gospel music from the 1930s and 1940s, the same kind of music which is the foundation of 1950s Rockabilly! This CD already sold 5 million copies in the USA alone, and maybe twice as many worldwide! Amazing!

From the movie - O Brother, Where Art Thou? -
the biggest selling CD of the year!

The 1950s are dead? NO WAY, the 1950s are always with us!!

A big hit children movie this year was Disney's Lilo & Stitch, and guess what, Elvis has six songs on the soundtrack!

The movie "Lilo & Stitch" features six Elvis songs.

The 1950s are dead? NO WAY, the 1950s are always with us!!

The most 1950s-like hamburger chains in the Wild West are Inn-N-Out Burger and Sonics Drive In, and business is booming for both of them.

You go to any department store and you will find a large selection of Hawaiian shirts, collar loop shirts, and the ubiquitous 501 Levi blue-jeans. You walk on the street and you see kids wearing jeans with the cuffs turned-up and Chuck Taylor's Converse tennis shoes.

About a year ago if you looked around Shepler's Western Wear it was hard to find any shirts with snap buttons and western yokes. Yesterday I went there and most of them feature snap buttons and western pointed yokes like in the 1950s.

You watch the Country singers on TV and, although often their music is nauseating, nonetheless many wear 13MWZ Wrangler bluejeans. This is the same model which Rodeo Ben designed for Blue Bell in 1948.

The 1950s are dead? NO WAY, the 1950s are always with us!!

The symbol of the 1950s, the symbol of America, the King Of Rock'n'Roll

You walk into the supermarket, and what do you see staring back at you? The greased up 1950s Elvis is staring back at you sporting his coolest pompadour! Yehp it's the metallic cover of TV Guide indeed. When I went back to the market the next morning to buy a second copy, they were all sold out, and the manager said it was the fastest selling magazine they ever had on their racks!

1950s Rock'n'Roll sounds to sell-out crowds everywhere!!

Meanwhile BILL HALEY'S ORIGINAL COMETS are touring the world to sellout crowds everywhere.

Alvis Wayne at the peak of his popularity!

RAY CAMPI is headlining festivals in Italy, while ALVIS WAYNE is doing the same in Scandinavia and Germany.

As the current cover of Blue Suede News testifies, RAY CAMPI is more popular
than ever today, certainly more popular than he was in the 1950s!

And of course Hemsby, the Rockabilly Rave, the Rhythm Riot in England, and Viva Las Vegas in the USA are still going strong featuring 1950s Rock.

The 1950s are dead? NO WAY, the 1950s are always with us!!

The Internet has performed a major service in promoting the 1950s Ways with sites such as the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame, Ebay, the many Rockabilly radio stations, and countless other sites of interest to 1950s buffs.

Thousands of available CDs offer much more 1950s Rock'n'Roll today than you could have ever dreamed of in 1958!

DVDs are being released with tons of classic 1950s movies, TV series, Rock'n'Roll concerts, what not, all easy to order through Amazon.com with a few clicks of your mouse!

Chuck Taylor's AllStar Converse tennis shoes:
all the kids in Las Vegas are looking for them!

I just came back from Shepler's Western Wear, and my eyes almost popped: I couldn't believe racks after racks of reproductions of incredibly wild 1940s and 1950s Western shirts, really cool stuff! Made by 4 different companies.

When I asked the salesman how did this happen, he answered, and I'm not kidding you: "All the rockabilly kids, all the teenagers have been clamoring for this stuff, it's the hottest stuff we've had in ages..."

I remember one year ago, in the same store, possibly even the same salesman, was saying something to this effect: "The stuff you want is long gone, and it will probably never come back, nowadays cowboys are looking to fit in, to be more urbanized, to be the same as everybody else, to look like college kids, nobody wants those crazy shirts...." . I almost puked!!

Well, hep cats, WE ARE BACK ON TOP NOW!!!

WELCOME TO THE MODERN AGE WHERE THE 1950S ARE ALWAYS WITH US!!!
