Column #47 - published July 5, 2001

For those of you in foreign countries, the Fourth of July is America's Independence Day, America's birthday, the day when Americans celebrate freedom.

Johnny Grande, Marshall Lytle, and Jacko Buddin, who does such a great job on Haley's vocals, rockin' out at Desert Breeze Park on July 4, Independence Day.

There could have not been a more fitting, a more patriotic tribute to the greatness of America, and to the celebration of freedom, than to see the ORIGINAL COMETS play all their multimillion selling hits, reminding the 30,000 people in the audience what Real Rock'n'Roll is all about, truly the music of freedom and excitement and happiness.

This spectacular celebration played itself out here in Las Vegas at Desert Breeze Park, a location surrounded by the majestic mountains of Red Rock Canyon and the Western desert near Las Vegas.

Joe D'Ambrosio blowin' that red hot sax, what we might best describe as aural fireworks, on the Fourth Of July, at Desert Breeze Park.

I don't have to comment much on THE COMETS' show: I have been astounded many times already by the sheer energy and stompin' Big Beat these guys dish out!! Many others as well have come out of a Comets' concert in utter disbelief!

This concert was no exception, a killer performance of rockin' madness to get the crowd roaring!

Franny Beecher, a few days short of 80 years young (that's eighty, cats, the big Eight-O!!), squeezing every last drop of Rock out that guitar, with such intensity that the Punk Rock kids in the audience were flabbergasted!

A kid next to me, leading a famous Vegas Punk-Rock band, was so stunned by the event, that he kept on shaking his head and muttering: "Man, this is f***ing unbelievable, I've never seen such killer rockin' band, this is unbelievable, we're crap compared to these guys, tomorrow I'm gonna go to Towers and buy all the Comets CDs I can find...."

Good sign, one more punk converted to Real Rock!

At the Rollin' Rock Studio Dick Richards delivers the swingin' Big Beat with that unique rimshots sound that many have tried to copy, but very very few have managed to succeed!!

The two days before the concert the COMETS stopped at the Rollin' Rock Studio (my office) to finish their second CD for Rollin' Rock. I can say without any doubt that it is a real wild swinger offering a mix of new original material and classic Haley songs as well!

That incredible Slappin' Bass we've been hearing for half a century now is courtesy of MARSHALL LYTLE. Marshall also sings on several of the Rollin' Rock tracks.

After the COMETS' concert was over, the Park authority put on an outstanding fireworks show, and, as an extra bonus for all of us Rockabilly Rebels, the last song played on the speaker system before the grand finale, was Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls Of Fire"!

Johnny Grande is on the side on stage, and often blends in within the mixes of the Rollin' Rock recordings, but if you think his playing is any less important, you're wrong! The piano works closely with the bass and drums to give it that unique infectious swingin' "Haley Sound"!

It really was a HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!! THANK YOU AMERICA, THANK YOU COMETS!!
