Column #71 (FINAL IN SERIES) - Published July 6, 2003

The distortion of the English language goes on unabated, causing confusion in many areas, including music, politics, arts, philosophy, etc.

I still have not forgotten the shock I incurred in 1956 when I was only ten years old and I bought a "Jazz" record!!

Let me explain: around 1955-1956 I had not heard about Rock'n'Roll yet. That probably came in late 1956. But I was aware of Jazz, by which I mean the wild swingin' New Orleans Dixieland Jazz and the rockin' rollin' boogie woogie stuff.

I saved for more than six months every Lira my parents gave me, so I could then buy a Jazz LP. The much awaited day finally came. I went to the record store, and asked the clerk for advice. He pulled out an LP which he said was very popular at the time in Paris and in Greenwich Village. I didn't know what "Greenwich Village" was, except that it sounded like "sandwich" and it was in America, so it had to be OK.

Original Dixieland Jazz Band.
Same idea as Rock'n'Roll: mix all kinds of ethnic music, from African to French, from German to Italian, add a rompin' stompin' Big Beat, and you've got Dixieland Jazz!

Boy, was I mistaken!! When I got home I put this platter on the turntable, and some boring/fast notes/broken beat/non-melodic mumbo jumbo comes out of the speakers! I was near tears, and could not understand what had happened!

Was this "Jazz"?? Apparently I wasted over six months of allowance money on something they call "Modern Jazz" or "Cool Jazz". Well there ain't nothing "cool" about "Cool Jazz" for my taste, indeed it's the "Hot Jazz" which I find "cool"!

The destruction of Real Jazz was well underway. The same fate would later happen to Rock'n'Roll, Country & Western, and Rhythm & Blues.

I wish they would use a DIFFERENT terminology to describe the complete whitewashing, ruination, and neuterization of the original American rockin' music forms!

Nowhere is this deceitful use of the language more prominent than in the elite media outlets:

"West Bank" to describe the 5000 year old historical Jewish regions of Judea and Samaria.

The "Arab City of Hebron" to refer to the city (Hebron) which gave the Hebrews their name.

The use of the word "diversity" in the Universities to describe teachers who all hold the same leftist ideology. Indeed a complete lack of diversity of opinions!

Islamic terrorists who blow up buses full of schoolchildren are called "militants" by Associated Press and CNN!

Back to the music, we now see Country & Western music videos which look and sound like cheap versions of the Back Street Boys! Where's the "Country", where is the "Western"?

And why do they call "Rhythm & Blues" something that doesn't have a solid rhythm, nor any Blues feeling?

And let's not get into the whole Rock'n'Roll terminology discussion, which we've had in several past Columns!

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to keep the English language frozen. Part of what makes English the universal language of mankind is its constant growth, its never ending acquisition of new words, of new expressions, a very fun alive language indeed, the language which reflects the dynamic nature of America!

(Speaking of growing language, check out the word "neuterization" used earlier, that's a new word I just invented!)

But, please, don't call Jackson Browne a Rock'n'Roll artist, nor Bin Laden an "activist"!

Always Rollin' The Rollin' Rock,
Rockin' Ronny Weiser,
The Rockabilly Rebel Westerner From Las Vegas,
The Wild Wild West!
